Exotic Animals

The Adelaide Veterinary Specialist and Referral Centre is delighted to offer an exclusive veterinary service for exotic pet owners.

Birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, ferrets, snakes, lizards, chelonians, amphibians and fish have specific heath requirements that differ to those of more traditional domestic pets and AVSARC is thrilled to welcome Dr Shangz Xie for these referrals!

Dr Shangz has an extensive career with exotic animals. After completing the Masters degree, Shangz moved to Chicago to work at Banfield Pet Hospital where he successfully built up an exotic pets clientele and sat on the corporation’s exotic pets care committee, helping to establish guidelines for their medical and surgical treatment.

During his time in Chicago Shangz had the opportunity to volunteer at Willowbrook Wildlife Centre, one of the largest wildlife rehabilitation centres in America. This position gave him multiple opportunities to enhance his medical diagnostic and surgical skills on avian and exotic mammal species.

Shangz has also published a number of peer-reviewed scientific papers, and continues to write about the care of exotic pet species for Banfield’s blogs.

Shangz now splits his time between completing his PhD studying heat stress in desert birds, helping out at the Adelaide Zoo and running Adelaide Exotic Pets Referral Services.
