Frans obtained his  Master’s degree in Agriculture (Genetics in breeding stock) in 1987, BVSc in 1992, MBA in 2002 (Research: “A new Business plan for the Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty “) and a MMedVet (Surgery) in 2013.

He was in private practise for 22 years of which six years he had a specialist surgical referral practise.

Frans joined the Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty in late 2009 after passing his South African Recognised specialist board exam (MMedVet) and held the position at the faculty until joining JCU Veterinary School in early 2016. At JCU Veterinary School, Frans lectured pregraduate and postgraduate vets and nurses and conducted resident training in small animal surgery. He was the academic head of the small animal surgery section from Feb 2016 until July 2021 at JCU Veterinary School.

His research areas are in preventative surgery (Juvenile pubic symphysectomy as a prophylactic treatment for hip dysplasia and fracture healing in wild antelopes).
